For a trustee
Someone trusted you with one share card โ a piece of a key. On its own it reveals nothing. Only when enough trustees combine their pieces can the person's full financial inventory be unlocked, to help their family. This guide tells you how to keep your share safe and how to use it when the time comes.
What you were given#
- One share card with a line of letters and numbers like
02-01-3f9a.... The02means two trustees are needed together. Keep this secret and safe (a locked drawer, a password manager). It is not useful to a thief alone, but treat it as you would a spare key. - The card also prints a SHA-256 code for the decryptor tool (used below to check the tool is genuine).
When to act#
Only when the person has died or become permanently unable to manage their affairs, and their family needs the information. This is your judgement, together with the other trustees โ there is no automatic trigger. In practice this will only ever happen in a real emergency.
How to unlock the report โ step by step#
You'll do this together with at least the required number of trustees (e.g. any 2 of 3). It takes a few minutes and needs only a web browser โ no internet, no account, no special software.
You need three things:
- Enough trustees' share cards (the number on the card).
- The encrypted file โ a file named like
...-encrypted.json. The family or executor will have it (kept in a Drive folder, USB drive, or bank locker). - The
Decryptor.htmlfile โ stored alongside the encrypted file.
Steps:
- (Optional but recommended) Check the decryptor is genuine. On the computer,
confirm the
Decryptor.htmlfile's fingerprint matches the SHA-256 on your card:- Mac/Linux: open Terminal, run
shasum -a 256 Decryptor.html. - Windows: open PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash Decryptor.html. The result should match the code printed on your share card. If it doesn't, stop and get a clean copy ofDecryptor.html.
- Mac/Linux: open Terminal, run
- Open
Decryptor.htmlโ double-click it; it opens in your web browser. - In box 1, paste each trustee's share line, one per line (yours and the others').
- In box 2, load the encrypted file (click "Choose file" and pick the
...-encrypted.json), or paste its contents. - Click "Decrypt & show inventory."
- The full financial inventory appears on screen โ accounts, policies, investments, property, loans, with nominees and contacts. Print it or save it for the family.
If it says it couldn't decrypt, you likely don't have enough shares, or a share was mistyped โ check the lines and try again.
Here's the decryptor with the shares and the encrypted file loaded, and the inventory revealed below:

Important to understand#
- You cannot open it alone. That's intentional โ it protects the family's privacy while the person is alive and prevents any one person acting unilaterally.
- The tool never sends anything anywhere. Everything happens on the computer,
offline. Your share is safe to type into the genuine
Decryptor.html. - You are not inheriting anything by being a trustee. You are simply helping unlock information. Who inherits is decided by the will and the law.
- Keep your share until it's needed or the owner asks you to destroy it (they may replace trustees over time, in which case you'll get a new card or be asked to discard the old one).
